Legolas Graphite Photo

Description

Yeh ok confusing title I know, but I wanted to answer some repeat questions about the background and stuff, so a picture says a thousand words :)

This is a photo of the actual original looking about as BAD as I can get it, with some strong natural light coming in from the window on the right hand side! :) My camera isn't designed for extreme close-up's sorry! :(

This light is reflecting off the graphite and showing the textures, where I have been pressing the paper and the almost oily graphite sheen! :) I've weighted down the edges as the pressure has made the paper curl slightly :D

So you can see, the background is not perfect, as it does have texture with the circular motion indented on the paper and the reflection shows the black in the centre of the collar is perhaps not as deep as the background black as there wasn't Lumograph underneath it. The background is as black as graphite goes, although if you squint close up, there are very tiny white flecks where the paper lifts, but I'm not sure I can ever get rid of every single one of them :)

When you view the picture in artificial light or with no reflection, it does still look pretty good, but I did mention on the original submission it looks even better digital, which is rare for a graphite piece! :)

All have have changed is the saturation and contrast, to try and get rid of the washed out scan (which looks horrible and grey, like all scans). There have been no other marks added or taken away, I just cropped the white edges :)

So I hope this answers a lot of questions, and if it disappoints...well sorry, but there we go! :(

It's still my favourite drawing so far...so I'll just have to keep improving! :)

- Kal :)

This is wonderful; I love it digitised, and I love it au naturelle! And I need to get one of those snazzy Lumograph pencils. Such delicious deep dark shadows. Irresistable.

This is really inspirational work, and I love that you said (on a previous post) that you still hate to draw hair! This hair is grrreat!

Can you tell me about some of the pencils you have in the photo? Someone mentioned an eraser pencil; I've never seen one of those before, but it sounds like just the thing for hair. And did you say you're using Bristol smooth paper? I've been looking online to buy paper but it's so confusing for a newbie. There are just dozens and dozens of brands and weights and textures. I think what I have is a bit toothy, so I can't get the softness I need in the skin of my subjects.

This is wonderful anyway. Have you been drawing long?
